Do football and culture contradict each other? Does football, like
art, hold a mirror up to certain aspects of life today? Head to the
Goethe-Institut Manila to find out, as the institute holds a special
Football Film Series from September 18 to 24, 2006. Catch over 50
feature films, documentaries and shorts from all over the world.
All are part of "Das Runde im Eckigen" (The Round in the Square), an
international football film package specially put together by the
Goethe-Institut to celebrate football and the recently concluded
2006 Fifa World Cup in Germany.

There are a number of feature films to watch out for in the
series. "One Day in Europe" follows four stories in Moscow,
Istanbul, Santiago de Compostela and Berlin on the day of a
Champions League final match. "Le Ballon d'Or (The Golden Soccer
Ball)" is about Bando, a young Guinean boy who aspires to be the
next African football star. Certain things, of course, get in the
way: his family needs him to work in the fields, his new stepmother
seems intent on making his life even more difficult, and in any
case, he is still in school, and it will be some time before he has
gathered and sold enough firewood to buy a proper leather ball. Were
it not for his unshakable faith in his own exceptional talent, Bando
wouldn't stand a chance.

Swedish film "Fimpen" tells the story of six-year-old Johan Bergman,
who becomes a national football sensation when he is discovered at a
children's playground. Johan is a quiet, gentle, somewhat dreamy
child - it's as if Saint-Exupéry's "Little Prince" had suddenly
landed on a football pitch. After scoring the match winner at his
debut game, he finds himself playing on the left wing for the
Swedish national team as they try to qualify for the World Cup
Finals in Germany; and soon the public are cheering him on
as "Fimpen", which is Swedish for "cigarette-butt".

"Boleiros" is a film about six Brazilian football stars who get
together years after retiring from the game. "Liberated Zone"
follows an East German football team's bid to become League
champions. In "Depth of Field", tabletop soccer game figure Number
10 miraculously comes to life and changes the world of football for
everyone.

The film series also includes three documentaries. "Adelante
Muchachas!" is about two girls' soccer teams in Honduras, each
coming from very different backgrounds. "The Champions" follows
three talented Borussia Dortmund Junior Team members for five years
as they try to make it to the club's Senior Team. "In Top Gear:
Women's Football in Germany" gives viewers a short glimpse into the
successes of Germany's women's football team and the long road they
had to take to get there.

Rounding off the film series is "Shoot Goals Shoot Movies", a
special short film compilation. In 2004 the Berlin Talent Campus--
part of the Berlin Film Festival-- advertised worldwide for new
blood to enter a competition on the subject of football. 611
directors from 75 countries entered their short films, 44 were
chosen. The 44 winning short films, including one from the
Philippines (Khavn de la Cruz's "Can and Slippers") are showcased in
this collection.

The films will be screened at 7pm on weekdays, with special
afternoon screenings on the weekends. Admission is free. The
Goethe-Institut Manila's Football Film Series is part of the
celebrations for German Month 2006. For more information on the

Boleiros (Brazil 1998)

Director Ugo Giorgetti divides Boleiros into six episodes, all of
them centred on football. The episodes follow six former football
stars and their lives years after retiring from the game.

Befreite Zone (Liberated Zone) (Germany 2002 )

The eyes of the nation, and those of its football fans, are fixed on
Saesslen, a small town in East Germany. The local club has made it
through to the League Cup final and now only a certain bunch of
Bavarians stands between them and triumph. Yes, it's the mid-1990s
and good times are-a-comin' to the former East Germany! The town's
inhabitants are all very intimately intertwined, sharing triumphs
and failures, ... and even the occasional partner.

Le Ballon d'Or (Guinea 1993)

Little Bando wants to be a football star like Cameroon football hero
Roger Milla. But for now he must content himself with kicking a
bundle of rags round his mud hut village in Guinea. Were it not for
his unshakable faith in his own exceptional talent, he wouldn't
stand a chance.

In Top Gear: Women's Football in Germany (Germany 2005 ) documentary

Women and girls playing football? It's taken for granted today, but
for many years the very idea was frowned upon. It's been a long
road to public recognition. Peter Behle's documentary charts the
progress of women's football in Germany, interviewing Tina Theune-
Meyer, who coached the national team to the world title in 2003 as
well as six European championships.

Aus der Tiefe des Raumes (Depth of Field) (Germany 2004)

One day during an important foosball competition, Hans-Guenter meets
the young press photographer Marion and his shy life is completely
thrown out of joint. While he and Marion enjoy a tender romantic
night together, a mysterious "birth" takes place in the next room.
Number 10 has accidentally fallen into the chemical developer in
Marion's improvised darkroom: Number 10 comes to real life and
mutates into a fully grown man under the powerful forces of mystery
and nature. Hans-Guenter doesn't know yet that his Number 10 will
soon change his neat and tidy life, nor does anyone know that Number
10 will soon change the world of soccer...

Fimpen (Sweden 1973)

Six-year-old Johan is a quiet, gentle, somewhat dreamy child, but
all that changes once the adult world discovers that Johan is a
football genius. On his debut for Hammarby of Stockholm he scores
the match-winner against Atvidaberg; and soon he finds himself
playing on the left wing for the Swedish national team as they try
to qualify for the World Cup Finals in Germany.

Adelante Muchachas! (Germany/Honduras 2004 ) documentary

Many a hardened pro from Serie A, the Premiership or the Bundesliga
would surely balk at this: a pitch of sand and grit, every movement
stirring up clouds of dust, and a lung-bursting altitude of nearly a
thousand metres. And yet this match in Tegucigalpa, the capital of
Honduras, is being contested by two teams of teenage
girls. "Compartir" was founded as part of an aid project for
deprived street children; while the players of "Motagua" are the
daughters of well-to-do families.
This dusty playground is the location for a meeting of two very
different worlds.

One Day in Europe (Germany / Spain 2005)

Four stories that take place in different cities on the day of the
Champions League Final Match between Galatasaray Istanbul und
Deportivo La Coruña in Moscow.

The Champions (Germany 2003 ) documentary

They dream of a successful career, and though they know how long and
hard they will have to work, they seem to have what it takes:
Mohammed Abdoulai, Francis Bugri, Claudio Chavarria and Heiko Hesse
are all 17 years old and play for Borussia Dortmund's Junior A-Team.
As this documentary begins in the summer of 1998, their team has
just won the German Junior Championship for the 5th year in a row.
The four are determined to make it as pros, and may just be on the
brink of breaking through into the senior team. Director Christoph
Hübner follows the quartet's development until 2003.

"Shoot Goals! Shoot Movies!" short film compilation

In 2004 the Berlin Talent Campus advertised worldwide for new blood
to enter a competition on the subject of football. 611 directors
from 75 countries entered their short films, 44 were chosen. The 44
winning short films, including one from the Philippines (Khavn de la
Cruz' "Can and Slippers") are showcased in this collection.
