The Alexis Tioseco Internship Program - Extended Application Deadline

The Alexis Tioseco Internship Program in Cultural Work and Arts Management for Cinema is looking for six (6) more undergraduate and fresh graduate students to join the program.

 

The Program is designed to provide participants the necessary knowledge and skills to engage in the different facets of cultural work and arts management for cinema. Participants develop a critical understanding particularly of Philippine Cinema including its history and current dynamics. The program introduces participants to and equips them with essential skills in film programming, film criticism, film archiving and preservation, film cultural body administration and cinematic project management.

 

Running for six (6) weeks starting on the 21st of April, the program is composed of lectures, workshops, socials and on the job trainings. Participants attend classes, conduct researches, go to film community events and work in film cultural bodies such as the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the Mowelfund Film Institute and the University of the Philippines Film Institute. Together with such activities, throughout the program participants also work on projects of their own from conceptualization to execution. The projects are aimed to contribute to the development of the film community and Philippine Cinema as a whole. These projects also synthesize what they have learned from the program. Projects are done by groups supervised by cultural workers specializing in the field which their projects fall into.

 

We are looking for participants with strong arts and culture background and who express and exemplify keen interest in the development of Philippine Cinema. In particular, slots are available for the following specializations:

(1) Film Programming and Festival Management

(1) Film Criticism and Curatorship w/ Theatre Operations

(4) Film Archiving and Preservation

The program is organized by the Baang Group in cooperation with the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the Mowelfund Film Institute and the University of the Philippines Film Institute, with the support of the Tioseco family.

 

 --- Alexis Tioseco (February 11, 1981 - September 1, 2009) was a Filipino Canadian film critic, curator, academic and advocate. He regularly contributed to magazines such as The Philippines Free Press, UNO and Rogue and had his articles on cinema released internationally in publications such as Cahiers du Cinema, Sight & Sound and Cinema Scope. In 2005 he founded Criticine, an online journal dedicated to encouraging intelligent discourse on Southeast Asian cinema. He also programmed and curated films for festivals and screenings such as .Mov, Cinemanila, S-Express and the Fully Booked Film Series. Frequently flying and attending film festivals abroad, he promoted Philippine Cinema and rallied for Filipino films in international platforms. He taught at the University of Asia and the Pacific and annually presented at and organized the Southeast Asian Cinemas Conference. He also advocated for the preservation of the cinematic heritage of the country. He worked with several film cultural bodies and was a part of several organizations including SOFIA (Society of Filipino Archivists for Film) and NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema). Alexis and his partner, the Slovenian film writer and programmer Nika Bohinc, were killed in their Manila home on September 1, 2009. An intelligent and gentle man, Alexis will long be remembered by his many friends and admirers around the world for his passionate championing of Philippine and Southeast Asian cinema. He is an incredible passionate young man who left us too soon. This program, one of Alexis planned endeavors, intends to continue and live by his ideals towards the development of the Cinema he loved.
